Diderot Effect - A lesson on updating your space over time.

Its the advice I needed to hear… and then I got to thinking maybe someone else out there needs to hear it too…

The Diderot effect is based on a story from 1988. It went something like.. He was gifted these beautiful shoes and therefore needed to buy a beautiful robe & then slowly but surely upgraded every piece of his wardrobe and then furniture and so forth.

Sometimes this can happen to me with my own home, especially when doing my home improvements. Its like where do you stop?!

For me recently it has been my landscaping… I replaced the rotted deck with hardscape and then needed the furniture and then bought string lights and flowers & now I want a beverage cart to complete the space?! Someone make it stop *face palm*

So here is the advice I needed to tell myself today..

I promise you - your house guests don’t notice whether you have all matching plate sets, or they don’t care if you are sitting on fold out chairs or if you have a folding table for a dining room table (aka me!). It’s okay to curate your space over a long period of time. It doesn’t need to happen all at once! Intentionally curating a space is always more preferred than just rushing to get it done + do it at a pace that works for you (esp. financially).

A home is where the memories are made & yes is it fun to have a stunning space - IMO - of course, but the progress shouldn’t stop you from making those memories or from having people over or from enjoying the space to the fullest.

The joy is in the journey!
